I’m An Atom

I’ve been a blade of grass

I’ve been an atomic blast

I’ve been the hand stroking a loved one’s hair

I’ve been a fibre on your favourite chair

I’m an atom and I’ve been everywhere

I’ve been the mountain up on high

I’ve been the star shooting across the sky

I’ve been the sole beneath your boot

I’ve been the gold in a robber’s loot

I’m an atom and I’ve been everywhere

We are both the same, me and you

So, don’t let religion tell you what to do

They threaten you with the man in the sky

Who will send you to hell when you die

But, we are atoms you and I

For timeless eternity we will fly

We are atoms and will never die

A Question To The God Of Religion

Hey Mister, yes, you! I’m talking to you. Answer me this? How come, “your” creation never fails to amaze us, it is constantly evolving and revealing untold wonders to us, but on the other hand, your religion continues to bask in the Dark Ages? Could the answer be twofold? Could it be that your religion is man-made and you don’t exist anyway? If that’s the case, I’m having this conversation with myself.

And another thing…

Your Lord’s prayer is grossly outdated and not in line with the current evolutionary path of the human race. Now…all is not lost, so I don’t want you to worry. I’m about to put forward an amended version, which is more in line with the times. I had a go at this some months ago, so this is an amendment to the amended version.

PS – To the real God, I wouldn’t mind your opinion on this, and if you don’t fancy communicating telepathically, I’ll accept an email.

Heavenly Friend, who resides within us

Hallowed be our name

Our kingdom come

Our will be done

In the whole of creation

Thank you for meeting all our needs, and

For showing us that we do not need to be forgiven

Please lead us into temptation

In order that we may experience all aspects of life

Don’t deliver us from evil

But show us that evil only exists because we create it

For ours is the kingdom

The power to love gloriously

For ever and ever

Our friend

Zen Poems Of Love And Happiness

This is the introduction for my latest writing project, Zen Poems Of Love And Happiness, which should be available to buy by the end of this year. I may yet change a few bits, but by and large, this is it.

In September 2024 I wrote and published a poem on my blog. Even though another poem followed before the month was out, I had no idea what was to come. I suddenly experienced a light-bulb moment and before I knew what was happening, I found myself writing my first ever book of prose. I’ve always been fascinated by the work of Rumi and Rabindranath Tagore; how they write such beautifully enchanting, and seemingly other worldly, works. I’ve also been greatly touched by the writing of Marcus Aurelius, and now I find all these verses just flowing out from within me; it really is such a beautiful feeling. I shouldn’t be surprised at this phenomenon (although I am a bit) because ever since Zen entered my life several years ago, things just haven’t been the same.

Zen is one of those words that gets used a lot, mainly by people who don’t understand what it means. It has nothing to do with lighting candles and sitting cross-legged on the floor making funny noises, but of course, you can light as many candles as you want, sit where you want, how you want and make whatever noises you want; it makes no difference to Zen.

I don’t profess to be some sort of world authority, but in this introduction, I am simply expressing my view in accordance with my understanding, which is derived from my actual life experience and intuitive knowing. Zen is about unteaching what you have been taught, it is about dissolving away the chains of your conditioning, your old, stale beliefs that keep you in bondage.

Zen is not a religion as such because it is not a man-made egoic entity. It does not require anything from you; neither are you required to believe anything. It is simply the natural presence of consciousness, there is nothing to “do” except to allow that higher power within you to weave its magic. You don’t need to be Einstein to realise the danger posed by institutions that require you to blindly believe in a doctrine, with threats of punishment if you don’t. In Zen there are no Gods, no gurus, no messiahs, no churches, no temples, no scriptures, no teachers, no dogma and no doctrine. Zen cannot be taught because there is nothing to teach. Of course, there are people out there, especially on the internet, who for a price, will sell you their “Zen course.”

Zen does not threaten you with an angry, vindictive God, who will pass judgement on you and cast you into the fires of hell if you don’t love “him” in the way “he” demands to be loved. Indeed, Zen does not demand anything and judgementalism is an egoic human trait that has its roots in fear.

People who do their best to live a life in Zen don’t care what religion you are, or indeed if you have a religion at all. This is because they don’t treat spirituality as a competition and do not have anything to prove or preach and have no desire to impose a belief system on others or to convert.

Beliefs are nothing more than thoughts in the mind. What you believe will create your reality. But your reality may not necessarily be representative of truth. With this in mind, I would add that your truth is your own and you have your own journey, so don’t just blindly believe what I have written here. If, however, what I have written resonates with you and you can take something from it, then I’m really happy to have helped along the way.

Zen is very subtle and incredibly beautiful, and will just bubble up from within you when it is ready with all the nonchalance of a lazy domestic cat; it will reveal you to yourself.

Work In Progress

As a species, this is exactly what we are; a work in progress, and, if we are the microcosm to the macrocosm that generally gets referred to as “God,” then God too is a work in progress. God is Life itself, which is constantly in a state of evolution. So, this is why that old adage that there are only two certainties in life; death and taxes, is wrong. There is a third certainty; change, or as I’ve already stated, evolution.

The way things are going in our world, you would think that there won’t be much scope for evolution soon if the human race carries on the way it is. We seem to be creating the same old problems for ourselves, which usually involves our fellow human beings having to experience untold suffering, and then trying to solve these problems with the same methods that have already failed time and time and time again for centuries.

It seems that the institutions in place that are meant to be helping and guiding our evolution in a positive way, namely our political institutions and religions have failed miserably. I’m reluctant to turn this blog into a platform for expressing political opinions, so I’ll stick with the spiritual stuff. Is it any wonder that our religion here in the West has failed. The first thing that Western religion teaches is that there is a God who is separate from all “His” children and that this God can get pretty shirty if you don’t conform to his needs and love “Him” in the way he demands. Some branches of this religion also teach us to feel guilt and shame because we are unworthy of the God. This is ridiculous!

There is only One soul, no other, although that One soul has appeared to split itself up into billions of separate souls. These apparent individual souls are God expressing and experiencing itself in billions of different ways simultaneously. Eternal life (God) evolves by way of this beautiful and wondrous process. Religion would have us believe that God itself, does not evolve but simply stays up there in the clouds, loving some and condemning others. The very nature of Life is evolution and God is Life itself, therefore it’s ludicrous to believe that God has simply stayed the same since time immemorial.

But, the religions are reluctant or unwilling to change; still preaching from the same outdated scriptures. What is needed is a shift in consciousness; you can’t solve old problems with the same old and tired mind-set. I genuinely believe that this shift is happening now, even as I type. It may not be overly apparent at this present time, but there are signs that the collective consciousness of the human race is indeed shifting to a higher level. It is impossible to stop evolution, that big old wheel keeps on turning and it always will, but our actions as a species can slow things down.

It is understandable that old and stale beliefs are very difficult to shake off, but shake them off we will…eventually. We are a work in progress, we have a long way to go, but we will get there.

It’s Nearly That Time Of Year Again – Part Three

002Well, we are now into December and the juggernaut that is Christmas is heading towards us in all its vulgarity at a rate of knots. What’s that I hear you say? You’re sick of mince pies already? But we’ve still got over three weeks to go! Never mind, put your feet up, relax and peruse my latest blog post.

It has occurred to me that religion actually contradicts religion. Although, I don’t know why it has taken me so long to see this as yet another wonderful paradox of the zillions that make up our world. I would further add that the arts are more religious than religion. Why? Well, to recap for newer readers, the word “religion”, can be broken down into two parts; “re” (meaning “again”) and “ligio” (meaning “to come together”). So, the true meaning of religion is the process by which the individual soul can realise its truth and merge (come together) again with the One Eternal Self. But the religion we have today, being man-made, relies solely on the presence of ego for its existence; and as I’ve written umpteen times throughout the pages of this blog, it is not possible to experience Self-realisation when the ego is present. You see, all religious practice is actually designed to prevent Self-realisation, because all religious practice involves the mind (ego) being engaged. This means that the practice of religion, can at best, be nothing more than a stepping stone to Self-realisation. The practice of religion generally means that one has to be indoctrinated, therefore the boundaries set by the indoctrination prevent the practitioner from looking beyond their particular chosen religion. The only way to break free of the restrictions is to become a rebel (be creative), which religion does not want.

Imagine what it would be like if the world’s artists, musicians, dancers and singers could only perform in accordance with a particular doctrine? Where would we be? Painting and performance art would be mechanical and pointless. All the great artists and performers get completely lost in their craft to the point where they virtually don’t even feel the presence of a body. In that time they have allowed themselves to become empty, free of mind, in order that the creative force can bubble up through them. In those moments the artists are performing from the soul, not the ego; therefore they have merged with God again, therefore in those moments they are pure religion. Not fakes, not carbon copies, but pure originals straight from the soul. People who perform a type of art or craft are closer to source than philosophers. The philosopher always has the mind engaged, otherwise the philosopher would not be able to philosophise.

We all have an abundance of gifts already. But if you want to give yourself a gift this Christmas… Be creative!

The Mysterious Mystery

Hello! My name is Richard!

Hello! My name is Richard!

Life is a magical mystery; we cannot know the unknowable; we cannot comprehend that which is beyond comprehension. Religion offers an imaginary God (as a separate being) and a list of do’s and don’ts (moral code) for the masses to follow blindly. However, practitioners of religions more often than not end up using their moral code as a yardstick for passing judgement on others. The Divine cannot be known, it can only be experienced and no amount of scriptures and commandments will ever change that. Enlightenment, is coming to the understanding that everything we are looking for is contained within us; that we ourselves are Divine; that we ourselves are contained within every leaf of nature…
