You Yourself Are God

Remember that with every step you are nearing God, and God too, when you take one step towards him, he takes ten towards you. There is no stopping place in this pilgrimage, it is one continuous journey, through day and night, through valley and desert, through tears and smiles, through death and birth, through tomb and womb. When the road ends and the goal is gained, the pilgrim finds that he has travelled only from himself to himself, that the way was long and lonesome, but that the God whom he reached was all the while in him, around him, with him and beside him. He himself was always Divine. His yearning to merge in God was but the sea calling out to the ocean. Man loves because he is love! he is melody and harmony. He seeks joy, for he is joy. He thirsts for God for he is composed of God and he cannot exist without him.

Sometimes We Have To Be careful How & When We Help Those In Need #3

There were great lessons to be learned from those experiences.  Not least of all, trying not to judge those who have been brought up in totally different circumstances to myself.  But every day brings one of life’s great adventure and when you are in the back yard of “God in human form” you can expect to be a part of his leela (Divine play).

There were two lessons that stood out for me and I will deal with them one at a time.  Firstly, Baba always used to say that the best way to achieve spiritual growth and liberation from the cycle of birth and death was plain and simple selfless service.  He also used to say that in any act of service in which we engage, we should always detach from the fruit (outcome), in the knowledge that everything is his will.  So, whilst our hearts were in the right place, and of course there was nothing wrong with what we tried to achieve, we made the mistake of wanting to see the outcome of our gesture and demonstrated this by participating in what should have been the end result, i.e. the giving of food etc and interacting with the people we were trying to help.  Because of our failure to detach we experienced disappointment which is the result of unfulfilled desires.

Now this may sound as though I am being harsh on Ciara and myself, however, there is a very deep and profound spiritual lesson here.  Feelings such as disappointment only arise because of ego attachment.  Who we really are is beyond all ego and earthly illusion, and therefore transcends pleasure and pain, bitter and sweet, happiness and sadness AND fulfillment and disappointment.  It is the ego-self within humans that is responsible not only for self-agrandisation but also for self-degredation; it is the ego-self within humans that prevents the individual from gaining moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).  In our haste to try to do a good turn or three we failed to think things out properly.  There is no right or wrong in this, for right and wrong are simply relative; opposite polarities that must exist side by side in this wonderful world of paradox, which brings me to the second point.

I didn’t realise until we got back to the UK that there was actually a much easier and more effective way of helping those in need.  I related my tale of woe to my friend Satyan and he told me that had we known we could have gone into the ashram office and made a donation.  The amount of money we spent on packets of biscuits, soft drinks, water, books, pens, sweets and other items of food was not a great deal by UK standards, but it was a large sum of money by Indian standards.  So had we known, we could have donated that money at the ashram office, and also specified where we wanted it to be spent; so much to the hungry and so much to the kids etc.  For sure, we did help a few people but had we taken more time to think things out, and detached from the outcome, the money could have been used more effectively, AND Mohan would not have been able to take a cut.

So the moral of the story is sometimes we have to be careful how and when we help those in need, also, when we are in someone else’s back yard we need to know the rules.

Healing Is

Healing is…

….releasing from the past. It is retraining my mind so as not to see the shadow of the past on anyone. It is learning not to make interpretations of people’s behaviour or motives. It is letting go the desire to want to change another person. It is letting go of expectations, assumptions, and the desire to control or manipulate another person…

Healing knows that forgiveness is the key to happiness and offers me everything that I want. Healing knows that the only reality in the universe is love, and that love is the most important healer known to the world.

To heal is to trust in a creative force that is loving and forgiving, and to know in our hearts that there is no separation and we are all joined in love with God and each other. It means that all hearts and minds are joined as one…

Healing is letting go of the fearful child so many of us carry inside, and awakening to the innocent child who has always been within us.

Healing is…

….peeling away the barriers of fear that keep us unaware of our true nature of love, peace, and rich interconnection with the web of life.  Healing is the rediscovery of who we have always been.

Gerald Jampolsky.

Our Deepest Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.  Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?  Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you.  We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It is not in some of us, it is in everyone; and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Pure Beauty

There is only one reliable mode of transport in life…. the crest of the wave on which love rides as it is transmitted from one heart to another.

Courage Is…..

Courage is what happens when your desire to make positive progress is greater than your fear of a negative setback.

Courage is what happens when you look at those fears, listen to them, learn from them, use them to prepare, and then move boldly forward.

Courage is how problems are turned into opportunities. Courage is why some people are able to move the situation forward though there seems to be no hope.

Courage is when you do what you know is right, even if it is the more difficult and unpopular choice. Courage is something that builds new strength each time it is exercised.

Courage is not something that you must obtain or struggle to develop. Courage is a choice that can be yours the moment you decide to use it.

When the goal is worthy and filled with meaning, the courage to reach it will be there. When your sense of purpose is strong and clear, your courage will be too.

Courage is indeed a powerful way to live. And you can choose it every time.

All Are One Part Three

In January 2008 I was very privileged to be invited by some Hindu friends to attend the annual Lord Mayor’s Interfaith meeting at Bath Guildhall.  It was a wonderful event attended by representatives of seven religions.  There were Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Bahá’ís and Sikhs.  One at a time they all got up to say their piece on the theme of “caring”.  It was quite amusing for me as someone who tends to avoid specific religions.  In my opinion religions do more to separate people than to unite them, thanks to human ego.   Although I believe that of all the religions The Hindus come closest to the truth.

I used the word amusing because there were seven different speakers from seven different faiths.  They all used different words during their address… but they were all saying the same thing.  It gave me proof beyond doubt that we can try as we might to be different and separate from our fellow man, but no matter what we do we can never break the inter-connectedness that exists between all beings, regardless of race, colour, creed or religion.  As Baba always said….

There is only one religion, the religion of Love

There is only one caste, the caste of humanity

There is only one language, the language of the heart

There is only one God, He is Omnipresent

Like a thread holding together the beads of a necklace, the Divine Principle is present in all human beings, all are God, all are One.

God bless and thanks for reading.

All Are One

All faiths have emphasised one common factor – that there is only one God and truth is his form.  There are no differences between Hindus, Muslims and Christians on this basic concept.  All religions, all scriptures, all spiritual teachings point to only the one truth, the unity of Divinity.  Instead of realising this, men are lost in wrong paths.

Jesus sacrificed his life for the regeneration and welfare of mankind.  Today there are some who exaggerate the so-called differences between different faiths and, for their own selfish purposes, exploit these differences and thereby bring a bad name to the great founders of these religions, who were spiritual giants.  No prophet or messiah asked his followers to hate other religions or the followers of other faiths.  Every religion has declared that God is One and that the Divine dwells in every being.  Jesus also proclaimed the truth that one spirit resides in all beings.
